10 DAY EMANCIPATION PILGRIMAGE; TO GHANA

DAY 1 (Sun) AKWAABA ANYEMI – Welcome Brother / Sister

Arrive in Accra, Ghana. Ghana is an ancestral home for the Pan Africanism torch bearer. Arrive at Zeenat Guest House for a rousing welcome. Receive orientation from your host company about the pilgrimage you are about to embark upon. Dinner and overnight at Zeenat Guest House at Spintex -Accra

DAY 2 (Mon) CENTRAL REGION/ THE DOOR OF NO RETURN AT CAPE COAST CASTLE

After breakfast at your hotel; you will embark on a road trip to the Cape Coast Castle. On arriving, you make your way through the Door of No Return, of hope and healing. Explore the grounds of this infamous castle with its slave dungeons. Every part of the castle has historical significance. This castle also houses the West African Historical Museum established by the Smithsonian Institute in collaboration with the Ghanaian Government in 1994. History will unfold the story of the slave trade whose impact is still being felt today, beyond the shores of Africa. Watch the film ‘Crossroads of People, Crossroads of Trade’. Overnight at your hotel in Elmina.

DAY 3 (Tue) MEMORIAL AT ELMINA CASTLE / EMANCIPATION VIGIL

Visit Elmina Castle. This is another infamous castle and slave dungeon. It was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is also known as St. George’s Castle. This castle was the first European structure built in Sub-Saharan Africa. Explore the grounds and rooms full of haunting history. Stroll down to the beach for a memorial ceremony where each pilgrim will throw bread into the waters in remembrance of ancestors. A wreath with a candle is solemnly pushed into the waters and a respectful one minute silence is observed in remembrance of those who died in the Middle Passage (before reaching the Americas).

After lunch, enjoy a tour of the colonial town of Elmina. Elmina’s rich history is captured in its buildings. They tell the stories of the people of Elmina and the interaction with those who came from outside. Visit the colorful and Asafo houses that were used as a place for warriors to prepare mentally and spiritually before going to war. They are wonderful examples of how art is used in daily lives of Africans.

DAY 4 (Sat) ELMINA - KUMASI

After breakfast at hotel depart to the city of Kumasi, seat of the Ashanti Empire. Experience historical glory when you visit Manhyia Palace, the home and office of former Asante kings, Ghana National Cultural Centre and Adum – the Central Business District of Kumasi. A regal history is told with relics and artifacts that dates back to 1700, a period when slave trading was prevalent. Enjoy a drive through the city to see the many monuments dedicated to the memory of the great Ashanti people. After your tour check into your hotel and relax from your long trip. Enjoy dinner and overnight at your hotel in Kumasi.

DAY 5 (Thu) TAMALE

After breakfast at hotel, check out of hotel and depart for an early morning drive from Kumasi to Tamale. Stop en route at Kintampo, Assin Bono. Both these areas were slave markets. Enjoy this scenic drive through the land where it all took place. Notice the change in climate and terrain, which has a direct bearing on the population of Africans that the slave trades targeted. On arriving in Tamale, check into your hotel and relax from your long trip. Enjoy dinner and overnight at your hotel in Tamale.

DAY 6 (Fri) RECEIVE ATONEMENT AT SALAGA

After breakfast depart for a 2 hour drive to Salaga. Salaga was one of the major towns. Meet with the traditional leader and visit the site where the slave trade started in the Gold Coast known as “The Salaga Slave Market”. Here you will find families whose ancestors were slave raiders and the replicas are still available in some of the family homes. In honor of this special commemoration village elders will perform an atonement ceremony includes speeches and the symbolic slaughtering of a sheep. The leader of the African American group will acknowledge the atonement. The atonement will be sealed by the sharing of food. Drive back to Tamale for dinner and overnight.

DAY 7(Sun) CITY TOUR

After breakfast in hotel depart for Accra. Enjoy an afternoon of leisure at your hotel.  Pan African city of Accra. Return to your hotel in Accra for dinner and overnight.

DAY 8 (Mon) DAY AT LEISURE / AND CITY TOUR

After breakfast enjoy a day leisure or do last minute shopping. Visit to Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, The Art Centre etc  In the evening enjoy a Farewell dinner , wearing your African clothes. Overnight at your hotel in Accra.

DAY 9 (Tue) ACCRA, FAREWELL / DEPARTURE

After breakfast, prepare for your trip back home. Depart for airport transfer to board your flight back home. KO NA BRA ANYEMI (Come Again brother / sister)
